What is the best time of year to travel to Sion? Also--what is the best method for arrival--i.e. plane or train, etc?

One can hardly answer your question without knowing what you want to do. Avoid early spring and late autumn though.

To be able to arrive by plane in Sion you should be a pilot of the Swiss Airforce and fly an F/A-18 or Mirage-2000 :-). If this is not an option, you will arrive by train from Geneva or Zürich.

thanks for your reply! I am a travel agent and one of my clients is trying to put together a travel package for employees as an incentive trip and wants to travel to Sion as part of the package. I am trying to build the group travel around when the best time for ease of travel to and from Sion would be--I am not familiar with the area, so i'm rather grasping at straws for information. I appreciate your helpfulness! Looks like I have a big job ahead of me!

The question is - what do you want to do in Sion? Most activities have their seasons. In autumn you can tour through wineyards, go hiking almost all the way to the mountaintops, etc. In winter you can go skiing, snowboarding etc, but for that you have to go into the higher locations around Sion. I recommend Grimentz as a base for both hiking and skiing, but there are many others. From Sion you are quickly in Leukerbad (very nice thermal baths and wellness area) and within reasonable time in Zermatt to see the Matterhorn. A great excursion is to the Eggishorn (cable car from Fiesch) and the Aletsch glacier.
