Can anyone give me a link to a street map of the town. Are the lakes within walking distance of the train station. Going on a day visit - are there any must sees.Any help will be appreciated.

I use www.viamichelin.com. It will give you a map and nearby attractions.

The lakes of Lautersee and Ferchensee are to the east of the town. You can get a bus but it's not frequent so better still ride the Kranzberg chair lift and walk to one or both of the lakes. Both lakes are well sign-posted. Ferchensee is about 2 hours and Lautersee one hour to walk. There's one bar at Ferchensee which has a cracking terrace and view of the lakes and the mountains. There are four bars at Lautersee. The bar at the end of the lake by the little church is run by a camp guy and his boyfriend. The bar is worth seeing for its decorations and there are some funny cartoons in the lavvy. Don't worry about the guys or the dog. None of them bite! I would walk to Ferchensee then Lautersee then back into town. It's part of one of my Garmisch suggestions. If you have time climb up to Kranzberghaus from the top of the chair lift before you go to the lakes. The view is stunning. If not go to Bar St Anton for a wet before heading for the lakes. Enjoy.

If you want a big cable car experience the Karwendelbahn is a must. The views at the top are amazing. Guess what! There's a bar at the top! It takes about 20 minutes and it's a cracking ride. Best to go up and down. We walked off it and it was not easy. You could do that first then head for the lakes afterwards. It has a website you can look at. Whatever you do when you get back to Mittenwald go to the Gasthof zur Post for something to eat and drink. There's a nice courtyard if it's warm and the food's bang on. The beer's good too and it's the best place in town.

It's about 4 euros up from what I can remember. It wasn't expensive. About the price of a beer. It goes up about 1200 metres so it's good value. Getting into the chair can be a bit of fun as it doesn't stop but there is an attendant who will help. The first time I did it I didn't know there was a safety bar to pull up and over! It's generally 100 feet off the ground with a couple of higher bits. Well worth it.
