Which is the best way to travel (bus or train) from Livorno to Florence and what kind of schedules are there for one day trip?

I'd take the train. Regular service, about a 50 minute trip. Schedules can be found by typing in your day/time at the website:

from the harbour take bus 1 to the train station, cost of one way ticket is 1 euro.
from the train station you can see the timetable on the above website rubbersoul75 mentioned.
it usually takes 1.10 minutes by train.
remember that if you ship docks at Varco Galvani, you will need a cab to get to the train station because it's completely outside the town.you may want to check this with your tour operator

my advice was if you were leaving from Pisa... not until I read hivoac's advice (more accurate- follow that) did I realize your asking from Livorno.
