Durban Driving to Richard's Bay
Posted: Thu July 27, 2006 12:36 AM UTC
Hi! We are arriving in Durban Mid-August. We plan to spend a couple evenings there, then drive to Richard's Bay, by way of a one-night stay in Shakaland.

Can anyone tell me if any part of that plan has a "downside" -- like bad roads on the way...whatever comes to mind? I appreciate any input. Thank you!

I'm reluctant to answer. I haven't been in that area in quite a few years so things might have changed. The road has been improved that i know. It use to be quite narrow. It carries a lot of traffic especially freight vehicles. Hope it helps a bit.

Was there last week....

Why not go to St Lucia village rather than Richard's Bay town? The village is touristy, the town is industrial/harbour. All roads excellent and conducive to speeding fines!

We spent 3 nights in St Lucia and bypassed Durban on the way to the Drakensberg.

Thank you, Gerald. As it turned out, we made the drive, and everything went very smoothly. The roads were all good, as you said.

The reason for driving to Richard's Bay was to be picked up at the airport, to spend six days at the ZuluNyala game preserve. While there, we took a tour into St. Lucia, to take the boat cruise of the estuary.

Boy, what a great time we had! I wish we had spent a month or more, instead of just 10 days, in the country! I've been back home two days now, and I sure do miss that trip! Thank you again for your response and suggestions.

Hi,
The main problem is crime.
make sure there is no rental car signs on your vehicle.
Whites in cars are a target especially if in a hired car.
