Halifax Walk to the Waterfront
Posted: Wed July 26, 2006 10:03 PM UTC
My spouse and I are planning a trip to Halifax next year for the Tall Ships Festival and are looking for accommodations within walking distance of the Waterfront. We are looking for a reasonably priced hotel or bed and breakfast. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Deb

There is a Holiday Inn Select at Robie Street and Quinpool Road. Halifax Sheraton is at the waterfront.

Downtown hotels will be jacking up their prices during the festival (as usual). I like the Delta Barrington, but would also recommend any of the hotels listed above.

RobDavis is right, hotel rates will be jacked up during the event. You may want to consider a hotel in Dartmouth (on the otherside of the Harbour) instead as they tend to be cheaper to begin with. The Holiday Inn Harbourview is on Wyse Road, Dartmouth. Literally, across the street is the main bus terminal. From there buses leave every 5-10 minutes to cross the bridge (almost any bus number will take you there, just ask the bus driver if it goes to Scotia Square) and will take 10-20 minutes (depending on traffic and the time of day) to get you to Scotia Square on Barrington Street. From there it is a 2 minute walk to the waterfront. Another option from The Dartmouth side would be to either walk or take the bus to the Aderney Gate bus/ferry terminal and take the ferry across to the Halifax side. The bus transfer is valid on the ferry and it will drop you off in the centre of where you will want to be for the Tall Ships festival. From the Dartmouth main bus station you could also take the bus directly to Mic Mac Mall, which most tourists like to visit, and it would be 10 minutes or so. With this being said, any of the hotels already mentionned would be good, but likely pricy!

I have found Halifax an expensive city for accommodation unless you move out into the suburbs (which I sense you'd rather not do). Although B&Bs are becoming more common in Halifax now, unfortunately for budget travellers (and I definitely put myself in that category) most of the newer B&Bs are going after the higher end of the market, and it's hard to find even pricey ones in the downtown area.

You could check bbcanada.com; I've used that site for various cities across Canada and never had a bad experience, but good luck finding something cheap!

For the most extensive information, check out

http://www.destination-ns.com

Order your free "Doers and Dreamers" guide, and you can really check out the whole of Nova Scotia at one sitting. Then if you see something you like, you can either plan a slightly longer stay, rent a car and enjoy, or find out where and how to get the best of public transit.

In Halifax, there are a couple of places where you can book a harbour tour on board a sail boat. These are quite expensive for regular time, but for vacations time, it's a nice treat if you don't live near water, and don't have acces to your own sailboat. You can take a turn at the helm, enjoy a glass of wine and a few nibblers. It's a great way to spend a couple hours and relax.
