Flights to and from Dundee land and depart from London City Airport. You could fly from heathrow to Edinburgh or Glasgow and take a train or coach or rent a car.
No idea of the costs - you would have to work out the cost of the various sections of your itinerary, once you've decided how to go.

The quickest way to get to Dundee is to fly. you cannot fly direct from Heathrow or Gatwick but you could fly to Edinburgh and then get the train to Dumdee

Flying time to Edinburgh from Heathrow Terminal 1 is about 1 hour, you would then have to get a taxi to the centre of Edinburgh to catch the train to Dundee (about an hour) from Waverley station.

Alternatively you could get the train from London to Edinburgh Waverley then just change tracks for the train to Dundee. You would have to come into London from Heathrow and Gatick to Kings Cross station to catch the Edinburgh train. It takes about 5 hours.

some websites for you to check out, you will also find fares here:

www.ba.com (British airways)
http://www.flybmi.com/bmi/en-gb/index.aspx (British Midland airlines)
www.nationalrail.com (fares are cheaper if bought in advance)

I would not recommend a coach unless you are on a very tight budget, it will take at least 9 hours to get from London to Dundee provided you don't get stuck in one of the UKs notorious traffic jams which can happen almost anywhere and happen very often.

check out www.nationalexpress.com for coaches

If you do fly into Edinburgh, take the airport bus, get off at Haymarket to catch a train for Dundee. No need to take a taxi, the bus will cost about £2.50.

as above flying would be your quickest and most comfortable option but if you are going by bus you should try http://www.megabus.com/uk/ much cheaper than national express if your early enough can get seats from £1 !!

There is in fact a direct air link from London CITY airport direct to Dundee but it is notoriously expensive.

In my opinion the best bet would be to fly London to Aberdeen. Dundee is approximately 50 miles south of Aberdeen.
Fly London to Aberdeen would probably be 500 dollars return.
Taxi from aberdeen airport to aberdeen railway station is 30 dollars (!)
Rail fare from aberdeen to dundee,54 dollars return.

If you really ARE on a budget, coach from London would be best.
