| George Town | Personal tour guide for 1 Posted: Sat June 28, 2003 06:07 AM UTC
Hi.
Thinking of visiting Georgetown. Would like to get a personal tour guide cos' then I wouldn't have to worry about getting around (can't drive). Most packages require a minimum of 2 people tho ... any suggestions or anyone to recommend? thanks! |

You can always hire a taxi w/driver. We did this for a really cheap price. We went around most of the major attractions in Pulau Penang. I stayed at the Crown Prince Hotel, which has transportation service desk right at the front. The price was around HK$300 ~ RM150 for 5 hours! You just tell the driver where you want to go and he'll get you there. Along the way, he'll give you a little background on the attraction itself. Georgetown itself is quite compact, and most of the attractions are very close.

Taxi is good with air conditioner. However, a Trishaw is an alternative. Hundreds of them around and tho it's scary weaving in and out of the traffic, you have right of way all the time.!!?? Unique way of doing it. Most riders (peddlers) are fluent english, wised up to the attractions and cheaper than taxis. Not sure of the rate for a day but i'd ask the hotel porter who probably has a "brother" who has a trishaw.

Take a bus. There's the shuttle bus around town. Free. Ask the Tourist Info Centre in Komtar.

Yes, the trishaw is a fun option. Adds to the local flavor. You get to see George Town at a leisurely pace, and you get to get on and off the trishaw easily along the way. Excellent for phototaking.
