can someone tell me the driving times between these itinerary stops on pch?
Posted: Tue July 25, 2006 12:01 PM UTC
can anyone tell me the leisurely paced driving times (lots of stops for pictures, etc) btw these coastal places?
LAX-Santa monica
santa monica - santa barbara
santa barbara - san simeon
san simeon - pt lobos
pt lobos - big sur
big sur - monterey
monterey - santa cruz
santa cruz - napa valley
napa valley - san francisco
We are planning for 3-4 days to get from LA to Napa, then two days in napa and then 3 days in SF. DOes this sound good? is 3-4 days too long to get up the coast?
thanks

>>>LAX-Santa monica

About 9 miles

>>>santa monica - santa barbara

About 92 miles

>>>santa barbara - san simeon

About 147 miles

>>>san simeon - pt lobos

About 85

>>>pt lobos - big sur

About 26 miles

>>>big sur - monterey

About 29 miles

>>>monterey - santa cruz

About 43 miles

>>>santa cruz - napa valley

About 111 miles

>>>napa valley - san francisco

About 47 miles

The milage is approximate. It should be an easy trip to do in three to four days.

Hope this helps,
Linda

One thing on your agenda looks a little backwards, from south to north you would go San Simeon - Big Sur - Pt Lobos - Monterey.
It's about an hour from Big Sur to Monterey. And less than 20 minutes from Monterey to Pt. Lobos. It's a little over an hour from Monterey to Santa Cruz; there's always about 10 minutes of traffic where 1 and 17 meet up there.

Are we talking w/ traffic or w/o traffic? ;-)

LAX to San Simeon in 1 day:
LAX-SM > 30 mins w/o traffic. 1hr w/ traffic. No need to stop for pic in-between
SM-SB > 2.5-3hrs
SB-San Simeon > 3-4hrs.

San Simeon to Monterey in 1 day
San Simeon-Pt Lobos/Big Sur > 4hrs or more b/c this is the section you want to take the most amount of time to travel. I would give this a whole day to be honest w/ you. You can actually camp out at San Simeon state park, right on the beach for $25. Then, you can wake up feeling refreshed in the morning and do this drive. It's beautiful! Make sure you stop at Nepenthe to get a bloody mary.
Pt Lobos/Big Sur-Monterey > 1-2hrs (great places to stay in Monterey or Carmel)

Monterey-Santa Cruz > 1-2hrs
Santa Cruz-Napa > I think it's about 3-4hrs (I've never done this drive before)
Napa-SF > 1hr.

You can also do Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Another cool little town is Cambria, just south of Hearst Castle. They have a beach front area called Moonstone Beach if you aren't into the camping bit. Great little hotels w/ jacuzzis under the stars too! Carmel, just north of Pt Lobos and south of Monterey is probably one of the most romantic places on earth! Great restaurants and cute B&Bs. Rather expensive though. Definitely check out Monterey Bay Aquarium if you get the chance and try to go whale watching! :) Your current agenda sounds like an awesome trip! A cheap place to go wine tasting is V.Sattui. Yes, it's a bit touristy, but it's free and there's a great picnic area! Silver Oak, Cakebread, Duck Horn, and Stag's Leap are my personal favs though....Sonoma is actually closer to SF and has great wineries too! 1hr b/w Sonoma and Napa, even if it is only 25 miles b/c the roads are curvy and you could get stuck behind a giant truck.

Have a great time!!!!

thanks SO much bruingirl. we have the same real first name--i'm angela too. thanks for your suggestions and unique info i hadnt heard before. if you have any ideas on where to stay on a lower end budget along the highway that would be great. we're thinking less than 100 usd per night (we're canadian) along the cost (4nights) and then spending more 150-200 usd per night in napa valley area (still dont know which town) and san fran itself.
thanks for your help in advance

Hi Angela!

Lower end budget:
The campsite in San Simeon is terrific w/ hot showers and stuff! $25. Otherwise, hotels in Cambria along Moonstone beach which will be more expensive:

http://www.moonstonehotels.com/

If you go the camping route, this will allow you to spend a little extra in Carmel/Monterey. Carmel has an AMAZING B&B called Carriage House Inn. It is probably about $250/night but oh, so worth it! Otherwise, I guess there's always the other choices like Best Western. Unfortunately, I don't have any good advice on that one. A good way to get a good deal w/ B&B's sometimes is to call the day of and if they haven't sold out yet, they will usually give you a good deal b/c they would rather sell out then have an empty room. Hotel Pacific in Monterey is another 4 star hotel that is about $200/night and really amazing. I actually stayed at that hotel for about $150/night b/c they weren't sold out! Amazing feathertop beds! soooooo nice!!!!
Napa Valley Inn in Napa is about $100/night. It's just a simple motor inn. Nothing exciting, but it does the job.
Hotel Monaco is a boutique hotel in downtown SF. They usually have good prices and they are located just blocks away from Union Square. Hotel Diva across the street from Monaco is another good deal for the location. Monaco is SUPER cute and has great service!

Just a couple other ideas in Cambria within budget:

Up the coast south of SF there's a lighthouse turned into a hostel with some private rooms: http://www.norcalhostels.org/pigeon/
A nice hotel with reasonable rooms in Sonoma county: http://www.hotellarose.com/index.shtml
