RE: can someone tell me the driving times between these itinerary stops on pch? Posted: Tue July 25, 2006 11:19 PM UTC
Are we talking w/ traffic or w/o traffic? ;-)
LAX to San Simeon in 1 day:
LAX-SM > 30 mins w/o traffic. 1hr w/ traffic. No need to stop for pic in-between
SM-SB > 2.5-3hrs
SB-San Simeon > 3-4hrs.
San Simeon to Monterey in 1 day
San Simeon-Pt Lobos/Big Sur > 4hrs or more b/c this is the section you want to take the most amount of time to travel. I would give this a whole day to be honest w/ you. You can actually camp out at San Simeon state park, right on the beach for $25. Then, you can wake up feeling refreshed in the morning and do this drive. It's beautiful! Make sure you stop at Nepenthe to get a bloody mary.
Pt Lobos/Big Sur-Monterey > 1-2hrs (great places to stay in Monterey or Carmel)
Monterey-Santa Cruz > 1-2hrs
Santa Cruz-Napa > I think it's about 3-4hrs (I've never done this drive before)
Napa-SF > 1hr.
You can also do Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Another cool little town is Cambria, just south of Hearst Castle. They have a beach front area called Moonstone Beach if you aren't into the camping bit. Great little hotels w/ jacuzzis under the stars too! Carmel, just north of Pt Lobos and south of Monterey is probably one of the most romantic places on earth! Great restaurants and cute B&Bs. Rather expensive though. Definitely check out Monterey Bay Aquarium if you get the chance and try to go whale watching! :) Your current agenda sounds like an awesome trip! A cheap place to go wine tasting is V.Sattui. Yes, it's a bit touristy, but it's free and there's a great picnic area! Silver Oak, Cakebread, Duck Horn, and Stag's Leap are my personal favs though....Sonoma is actually closer to SF and has great wineries too! 1hr b/w Sonoma and Napa, even if it is only 25 miles b/c the roads are curvy and you could get stuck behind a giant truck.
Have a great time!!!!
