Q: Hello ,

my husband and I will be visiting Europe this summer.

We want to visit Italy by train from Berlin.

Both of us really want to start off with the big cities like Rome and Florence.

I would like your expertise on this.

1) Should we see more places or only stay in rome?

2)Any tips for a low cost and safe B&B?

3)Any info on train deals?

Here is an idea. Try 3 nights in Venice, 3 nights in Florence and 4 in Rome. I think that will give you plenty of time in each city to see all of the key sights. Mind you Rome is so rich in things to see that you could spend all of you ten days there and not see it all.
As for trains try an Italian rail pass but if you are only taking 2 or 3 trips on the train it is not worth the cost.

Paul2001's suggestion about spending some time in Venice is a good one, if only to break the journey for a night. Berlin to anywhere in Italy is a long one.

I don't know Venice, but you can certainly fill a three night stay in Florence with a lot of action. I guess you may be interested in art etc, if you're going there, so make sure you book your ticket for the Ufizzi in advance. Otherwise you could waste half a day waiting in line.

5 days in Rome will allow you to see a lot - more than in any other city on the planet. You can also take day trips to places like Tivoli.

Why not have a look at www.bahn.de for train deals? Might be something useful there.

Just briefly, Rome has more to see than Florence, but Florence is a great visit too. Trains ride cheaply and quickly between both several times a day (takes about 2 hrs). I did Florence as a day-trip, and probably could have used a second day there, but my first interests were in Rome.

I'm also planning my trip to italy this mth with my husband. I've been to Rome only once before and intend to go there again as there's so much to see in Rome!
1) I think Paul2001's suggestion is a good one. I'm planning 2 nites in Venice, 2 nites in Florence, day trip to Pisa and 3 nites in Rome!
2) I've tried many websites on accom. and Venice is the most expensive. you can try www.hotelclub.net. they may have some special last min. deals.
3) Try www.trenitalia.com. You can find all the schedules there and even buy online if you can read italian! Ave. single trip ticket is around 30euros per pax depending on your destinatios and whether you take 1st or 2nd class.
