Tallinn County Tours & Hotels In Tallinn

I will be in Helsinki on business 13-15 September before traveling to London Sunday 17 September and considering a day/night in Tallinn. Does anyone have any recommendations on best organized tours to do and/or any recommended hotels for an American businessman? Any advise on specific sites and places to eat are welcome too.

Thanks,
Mark

I stayed at the hotel G9 Heidi Tue in January. Spartan but clean. Fully plumbed. Cost 650 EK, about 44 euros for a single. I had to communicate in German with the desk clerks.

I had a great meal of baby lamb ribs at the restaurant next door. No name. Cost 235 EK including a bottle of wine.

Restaurant Hansa in old town has good ambience. Had a great lunch there for 114 EK.

Best exchange rate I found is at Stockman department store, 5th floor, a short walk from the G9.

Also had a magnificent breakfast in the Stockman. It's buffet style, herring, salmon, and other great stuff. Cost 69 EK, about $5.

Everybody is very courteous but nobody smiles in this city.

The site to see in the old town. It is one of the best in Europe, though Riga, Villnius, Krakow, Prague, and others are better. You'll enjoy Tallinn and catch the others later.

You didn't ask, but there are several ferry services from Helsinki to Tallinn. I floated on the ship Romantika of the Tallink line.

The restaurant that Dukaat mentioned is called Šeš-beš. Its really a great place to eat at.
I would not suggest staying in G9 as it is more of an hostel than an hotel. I think old town hotels are more suitable for an American businessman. :)

The Radisson SAS hotel is fantastic. The bar on the top floor has arguably the best view in Tallinn. The hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the old town.

IMHO, the best guided tour (bus + walking tour) is probably the Tallinn Official Sightseeing Tour which is in English & Finnish all year 'round. It is free with the Tallinn card as are most of the must-do activities (see www.tallinn.ee/tallinncard).

A great place to eat which is often overlooked is the buffet at the Meriton Grand Hotel which is down the hill from the Pikk Herman tower, not far from the railway station). The buffet is every night.

Also, I would recomend that you get hold of the 'Tallinn In Your Pocket' guide which comes out every two months - it has a great city guide plus a guide to what's going on while you are there. Most hotels give you a copy free and you get a free one with the Tallinn card anyway.

There are a few suggestions for other things to do on my Tallin pages. Enjoy your stay!
