Uluru National Park (Ayers Rock) Driving
Posted: Thu July 20, 2006 07:02 PM UTC
I am considering doing a day trip to Kings Canyon during my stay in Uluru.

1) As a foreign driver, can I drive a car in Australia? Are there any restrictions?

2) Is it worth it to do the drive myself or better to use a tour company?

Thanks

car hire in Australia is no problem, but they do drive on the left, with most hire cars you have to stay on tarmac roads

the tours are good, the coaches are comfortable and air conditioned plus you get the commentary and info from the driver, its just a case of how you`d like to do it, having a car makes it more flexible for you as you can spend as long as you like there, but with a tour you can sit back and enjoy the scenery and let someone else do the driving

You need an International Driving Licence, which you get before you leave home.

I am with Bernie, grab a day tour, you will then be able to learn more about the area. Make sure your tour leaves early in the day and allows you to do the rim walk at the Canyon.
If you are going to be there in our summer, it will be really warm...at the moment it's perfect for walking.
