Haiti travel safety question...
Posted: Sun July 16, 2006 12:17 PM UTC
I've been planning for a trip to Port-au-Prince in mid August (just bought my tickets, place to stay etc.) I just got word from a woman I've traveled there with before that the situation in and near Cite Soliel and Port-au-Prince in general are getting iffy again. Has anyone else heard these rumors? Obviously I don't want to go down there if there's a lot of fighting, shooting etc. Keep me posted please!
I just got back from Haiti (Port-au-Prince)in June and didn't feel unsafe at all. Hopefully things are still stable.. but I just thought I'd check.... especially since I'm young and white! Thanks!

Hi I am also planning on going to Haiti in Mid August and I was wondering if you have found anything out about the situation. I am getting mixed messages and I have never been to Haiti. Some people are telling me that things are just as dangerous as they have been for years and others are saying that it is very bad the last few weeks.

Sorry I cant be of help. But, I too am trying to go to Haiti. I am in the Dominican Republic, and would be interested in traveling with someone for more company and backup. I hear mixed messages, but I think danger is always lurking in the folds in Haiti, that seems to be a clear message. I think the idea is to avoid the fold....Please let me know if you receive any more info or would like to link up....

Hi. A family friend lives and works in Haiti. He says the news is blowing things out of proportion. He just avoids the areas where they are having problems. It's never been a particularly stable government. You just have to be aware of your surroundings. I have a friend down there right now but haven't heard from him. He should be getting home soon. I think I would have heard if there was a problem. His wife is a friend of mine.
