| Jersey | Rex Hotel Posted: Wed June 25, 2003 12:58 PM UTC
We're visiting Jersey in July - staying at the Rex Hotel, St Helier- Anybody any experience of it?
Also, is the Belgo Restaurant still there in St Helier? - Visited this 3 times the last time we went! |

The Rex hotel is a fine hotel in a good location close to the main centre of the town. I have never stayed there but I know friends who have and never had any complaints.
Unfortunately Belgo's is no longer there. It is now called the Buddha Bar! Let me know the kind of food you may be interested in - as an "ex-local" I know lots of places!!

We're up for any good food! It's a shame about Belgo. Real ale is good - I'm led to understand that the local brews are cheaper than anything imported.
We'll be making at least 1 trip to the Moulin de Lecq and the Zoo is must - one of the most memorable bits of my last trip.

If you are into the local brew why not try eating in some of the pubs. A lot of them dish up a mighty fine meal. Try L'Auberge du Nord or La Fontaine Tavern - both on the north coast. A particular favourite of mine is the Castle Green pub (next to Mont Orgeuil Castle) but be warned, it is quite pricey. Moulin de Lecq is lovely and in a great setting next to the beach I spent virtually all my school summer holidays.
If you want a very special meal for a special night/occasion then go to Suma's (you must reserve a table - the details are on my travel page). It is one of the top restaurants in Jersey. A bit expensive but well worth it. Of course the zoo is fantastic - always something new to see there. I guess you must have already visited the castles/museums etc? An absolute must is the German Underground Hospital if you have not already been. It is an eye opener ..... If I can help with anything else let me know.

Suma's is booked for Saturday - Can't wait!!
One question, what's the correct pronunciation for 'Mont Orgeuil ' My partner suggests' 'orgay'?

Excellent! - you will have a great meal there. If you have enough room for a dessert make sure you try the selection of mini puddings. It is outstanding!
As for the pronounciation of Mont Orgeuil aka Gorey Castle - it is OR-GUY. I hope you have a great holiday!

Just got back - fantastic weather and good break.
Suma's was brilliant - the food was to die for - could have munched on their bread basket all night! There wasn't a dessert selection on offer, but what we had was delicious. The Rex was good too - although their plumbing needs updating! Thanks for your recommendations - I'll be adding some tips in the next few days.

i forgot about the home baked bread!
I am glad you had a good time and that the weather held out for you (it is now miserable according to my mum!) I look forward to seeing your travelogue ... and of course rating it!!
