Onsen Hotel Recommendation for a Day Trip
Posted: Tue July 11, 2006 06:48 PM UTC
Hello, we will be making a one week trip to Hokkaido at the end of July. A day trip to Toyako has been planned, and we really want to take the opportunity to indulge in an onsen experience once there. Are there any onsen hotels there that someone would recommend as a good place to bath? We do not plan to stay the night in Toyako, only a day trip. Understand that some hotels have "day plans" or charge a fee for daytrippers. We just do not know which ones to go to. Thanks!

I would highly recommend the Houheikyo onsen (past Jozankei on the bus), its not part of a hotel but is open to the public and is just wonderful. Look on their website www.houheikyo.co.jp... we went in the winter but my friend was there last summer and said it was just as good.. Have a great trip!

What city do you intend to stay? I actually plan on being in Hokkaido as well at the time you mentioned and have looked up some places to stay and I was there a couple of years ago before as well. Depending on your budget, you can either 1) go for the free onsens during the day; 2) go to an onsen hotel for a day trip; 3) stay overnight at an onsen hotel; 4) stay overnight at an onsen hotel where they have a private bath for your room. The last option is obviously the most expensive and usually cost between 20,000 to 30,000 yen per person. I might recommend some places if you know where you will go.

By the way, when I said private bath for your room, I meant a private onsen which is very nice (and expensive).

I went to Noboribetsu for my onsen experience and stayed at Takimotokan..and
just loved it. But it's not cheap, but then, there's really nothing cheap in
Japan.
