| Huangshan | Huangshan trail map Posted: Tue July 11, 2006 02:15 PM UTC
Can anyone tell me where can I find a good trail map of Huangshan?
Yes I have searched the internet, and the best I could find shows a few major trails, and I could not locate one showing the "new" White Cloud Scenic Area going through the Xihai Grand Canyon. I heard that it is a circular path starting around the "Cloud Dispelling Pavillion", through the "Immortal Walking Bridge", through the valley, Heavenly Sea Area and back to the "Cloud Dispelling Pavillion". I can also be reached at "John928@telusplanet.net". Thanks |

I bought a map when I was there. But it is all in Chinese and it is more representative than having actual distance and elevation.
Did you want an English map? You may try the China Travel Service in Anhui.

The lonely planet book had a good enough trail map (we went there in 1998). The maps you can get once you arrive there would be more 3-d, yes, as above said, in Chinese.
There are many peaks there. The whole thing is that there are very few trails. And many peaks are not climbable. Also, if you want to go from A to C, you have climb up and down B in between first, no way to get around B. Have a great time, we loved there! Do also visit the villages nearby.

Further, the so-called loop. YOu can choose either start from the East (front?) and finish at the west side (back?) or vice versa. We did not hike the entire thing. We took the cable car from Yun Gu Si (cloud valley) station to Bai E Ling (white goose ridge), hiked from there to the bei hai area (north sea), xi hai (west sea), then guang ming ding (bright summit), bypassed the lian hua feng (lotus peak), etc, stayed over night at yu ping lou hotel (jade screen). Next day climbed tian du feng (celestial peak?), back to yu ping lou, hiked to the cable car station of the same name then took the cable car down to ci guang si (mercy light temple?)/hot spring area: sort of starting from back and ending at front - as locals call it.
Many people base in one hotel, and go to different peaks from there. I do not think it is the best strategy as you could see from the map, there are not many trails, that means basing in one place forces you to take repeative route. There are hotels at yu gu si, bei hai area, zhong hai (mid sea) area, and yu ping lou. Hot spring area has largest number of hotels.

Actually relatively expensive to get there, entrance fee and stay at Huangshan overnight. It may be worth paying more to get a tour guide to point out the names and stories on each famous mountain point, rocks and trees with the accompanying history, legend and literature. So a map is just a souvenir than your guiding trail. Huangshan is not like Grand Canyon where you can work your way. It is narrow series of steep stone steps along mountain crest and up the cliffs with hordes of groups of tourists coming in both direction and unless it is a very clear hot day, the weather can change too, misty, wet or windy.
One of the best places I have been in China.
