Are we allowed to walk down into the crater? And also how long does it take to walk up the island ? One last thing. When you walk up the mountain, do you go up and over ?

Hi,

It takes about an hour and a half to walk up to the summit. The walk is fairly easy with good paths, and in some areas boardwalks over the rocky lava flows. The summit is more of a plateau, and is all boardwalked.

There are 2 craters, and from the summit, you can walk around the crater rim. I don't know about climbing down into the crater - it is densly covered with scrub and bush. It's probably not a wise idea.

You can either go back the way you came, or go up, round the rim, and down another path. I did exactly that 2 weeks ago, going up from one wharf and back down to the main Fullers ferry wharf, but I was dropped off and picked up by a friends boat. If you are going over with Fullers, you will need to make sure you come back to the same wharf. The paths are signposted.

There is heaps to explore on the island - have fun in the lava caves!

Hi
The crater itself isn't that spectacular. I doubt if it is possible to walk into.
As 'allikat' said you have to go back to the same wahrf if you are travelling with Fuller's from Auckland.
