Transport to Neuschwanstein
Posted: Tue October 1, 2002 10:18 AM UTC
I probably have the opportunity to go to Munich for 2 or 3 days in Octobre.
I really like to spend 1 day visiting the castle Neuschwanstein. Having no car, what is the best way of getting there?

With the train from Munich to Schwangau / Hohenschwangau and then with the bus or taxi. Leave very early in the morning!

Hiya,

it is not easy to get there by public transport, but it is possible. You will need about 2,5 hours for the 100 km by train and then by bus. Check connections at:

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Use Hohenschwangau as final destination.

If you go there on a working day (Mo - Fr) you can use the Bayern Ticket for 21 EURO which is valid the whole day for up to 5 persons travelling after 9:00 o´clock on local transport.

If that is too complicated you might prefer a package daytrip from Munich by coach.

Cheers,
HORSCHECK :-)

Helga,

I also think Schloss Linderhof is very beautiful especially with its mountain setting (see photos in my travelogue). We found Neuschwanstein is MUCH MORE CROWDED than Linderhof (sometimes you have to wait for hours to visit the inside of the castle - so be there REALLY EARLY if you want to see the inside) Linderhof offers both English and Germany tours inside of the palace, and do not miss the fountain show on the hour.

If you do not want to go through the trouble taking public transportation, there should be daily bus tours taking you to either (or maybe both in a day) to them from Munich, ask your hotel people or your local friends for help.

Have a good time!

http://www.shop.viator.com/brochure/ed_PRODUCT_results.jsp?CITY=MUNICH&L=MOSTPOP This web site has bus tours that last 10 hours or so to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof combined for $41.00 You really should not miss Linderhof no mater how you decide to see Neuschwanstein.

I visited Neuschwanstein a couple of weeks ago: There is a from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Fuessen every hour. A few trains go direct, but most of them involve a change at Buchloe. In either case the journey takes just under two hours. Once at Fuessen you need to take the bus to Hohenschwangau. The bus stop is right oposite the the train station -impossible to miss- and the journey takes about 10 minutes or so. From Hohenschwangau, it is about half an hour's hike up to the castle.
You can easily start your trip early in the morning and get back to Munich in the evening. I even found some time to walk around Fuessen, which I thought was a little pretty place to wander about. Enjoy.

Thanks guys for the info. I didn't know Neuschwanstein was so far away from Munich, but as I really want to see this place, you gave me some good ideas. I'm now considering of taking a package daytrip from Munich, because I will be travelling alone and I think this will be easier for me. If you know of some good websites for package daytrip, please let me know. Agbat already gave me one. Thanks
Helga
