how big sre the cook islands and what is the population? What is the level of crime there and are there any animals that can cause serious harm to humans? Are the cook islands under NZ rule?

They aren't under NZ rule, but they are a NZ protectorate. There's practically no crime, I felt wonderfully safe there as a woman traveling alone. There are virtually no poisonous insects or reptiles on land. In the lagoon, watch out for stonefish, which are very well camoflaged. I'd venture to guess the most dangerous animal around is probably the occasional tourist driving too fast on the wrong side of the road.
