I am from Kaohsiung.
My favorite part is "Hsitzu Bay Scenic Area" http://taiwan.wcn.com.tw/en/kaohsiung/hsitzu.shtml and the best one is the "Chichin Scenic Area" Chichin is a small island located cloase to Hsitzu Bay. You can take a ferry to Chichin.(just about 10-15 min) It only cost about 10-15 NT (0.5 USD)... like the bus fare. It is pretty to see the Koashiung port and the beach and light house on Chichin island is good. Oh.... don't forget to enjoy the sea food there.

other famous place is like Fokuangshan(Light of Buddha Mountain)
http://taiwan.wcn.com.tw/en/kaohsiung/buddha.shtml but it is about 1 or 2 hour away Kaohsiung city. In the city, I also recommand the love river and Wu-Fu 3 rd. Liuho Night Market(Liuho 2nd Rd.) has a lot of delicious food. San-Do Rd and Wu-Fu rd has some big department stores. They are good for shopping.
