Kruger National Park Advice on itinerary
Posted: Tue July 4, 2006 03:44 PM UTC
Hi all,

Am planning a trip to KNP in late September of this year and have put together a possible night stop itinerary.

Night one - Orpen

Night two - Olifants

Night three - Satara

Night four - lower sabie

Night five - Biyamite

Night six - Jock safari lodge or Lower sabie

Night seven - Pretoriuskop

Is it advisable to be constantly travelling between camps or would you recommend staying a couple of nights in one area?

Can anyone advise on an area I should see that might not come into these area's?

Many thanks in advance

I haven't been to the KNP for a while. It was my dad's favourite place so "I got a bit too much from it as a child. I think it is a great idea to move from one camp to the other if you don't mind packing up everything every morning. I remember a lot of people with campers just doing that. Sleep over in another camp every night. Satara was his favourite. Use to be a lovely camp. So is Lower Sabie.

This is what we did last year when we visited KNP. We were really nervous and thought we would be packing too much in for a week, but while in the park you drive the entire time, because that is how you see the animals. So transferring to camp to camp is no problem. We are actually glad we did this and if we go to KNP would do the exact thing. You do have to pack up, but there were two of us so it was easy.

You have chosen nice camps and will love it! We stayed in Lower Sabie (our favorite), Satara (the lions near this camp were all around for us), Oliphants (beautiful camp with a river and a great view), Tamboti (a great tent camp which is very secluded, close favorite), Skukuzu (least favorite, so commercial). It looks like you are working your way south to north, we worked north to south. You will cover a very good portion of the park.

The roads are great, people friendly, easy to find yourself around and the experience is unforgetable. Any other questions let me know. :) Don't forget a binoculars like we did!

Hi

Kruger is devided into a few ecological zones so it is best to go to different areas.

The first 2 camps you mentioned are roughly in the same area. Olifants is stunning, but just north of that is my favourite Letaba. The difference is that Olifants is on a hill and you have spectacular views, whilst Letaba is nestled on the river. Excellent area for elephants.

Satara is an excellent area for seeing cats.

Lower Sabie is a lovely camp and in the South of the park where generally the quantity of game is greater than further north and where you have the best chance of seeing rhino. I have also always been lucky with wild dogs in the south as well.

If I was going to spend 7 nights in Kruger, I would spend 2 nights at Olifants or Letaba, 1 night at Satara, 3 nights at Lower Sabi and the last night at Pretorius Kop - as it close to a gate, so you can leave the park easily if needed. I wouldn't do a different camp every night, being in the bush is about seeing animals, but it is also a very relaxing and calming experience.

I agree with PeteMorie certainly do work your way through the park, but try to spend more nights in one location, the bush vibe that overcomes you is kind of enchanting and I think you'll be glad to just zone out a bit instead of constant travel and new camps everynight. Driving around all day looking at animals can get too much, and there's plenty of interesting natural stuff going on at the camps, from warthogs, to buck, to opportunistic hyena, or just watching dung beetles, birds, locusts, playing with the little ant lion holes to see if you can fox the ant lion into into thinking your blade of grass is an ant... Anyway just my two cents worth. Have a wonderful trip.
