| Cook Islands | Where to stay? Posted: Tue July 4, 2006 12:22 PM UTC
I will be visiting the Cook Islands for 2 weeks in September.
Does anyone know of a nice place to stay for arounf NZ$100 - NZ$130 a night. Would prefer a private beach bungalow with hot water. Have considered the following: Varas - beach studios but not sure they are actiually ont he beach and have heard its very noisy Sunrise Beach Bungalows Rarotonga Backpackers Also - is there a preferable part of the island to stay? Muri beach seems to be the most popular but dont think either of the above places are on it. Help... |

A lot of people like Muri beach, but the southern coast offers the best snorkling (Titikaveka). The western coast of course is best protected from the wind and offers the most beautiful sunsets.
The northern and eastern coast are not well suited for swimming or snorkling as the reef comes very close to the beach and so the lagoon is too small. For lodgings you may want to look here: http://www.ck/ or try the Cook Islands Tourist Board here: http://www.cook-islands.com/accomm_finder.php Good luck!

If you do choose Muri Lagoon I can recommend Shangri La Resort. He has about 4 modern cabins, swimming pool and is located next to sporting goods rental place, Pacific Resort and a good restaurant. Don't know what he charges now, but you can check out his web page. I suggest googling it.

If you want an inexpensive, quiet place to stay, you might want to check out the Puaikura (a little more than you mentioned). It's on the southwestern side of the island across the street from a beautiful swimming beach. Muri beach is the "busiest" and most popular beach where you can wind surf, kyak, etc but the lagoon is quite shallow and clear in that area so the snorkeling is not so good. The southern part of the island around the Fruits of Rarotonga is the best for snorkeling. There are a few agencies that specialize in renting out private holiday homes which you might want to check out especially if you're going to be there a couple of weeks (they usually rent by the week). "Rent Raro", "Shekinah", and "Rarotonga Reality" are the three I know of. Hope this helps.
