As I'm sure you know, Wales is a country, not a city ;-)
It really depends on what you like. The majority of Wales is rural, with mountains in the middle and a wild coast around the edge. There are a couple of big cities, such as Cardiff and Swansea, and tiny ones, such as St Davids in Pembrokeshire.
The highest mountains and the real Welsh-speaking areas are in the Northwest, but public transport is not very good.

Hi,
have a look at the town Cardiff. Also there are nice landscapes like the snowdon area and the brecon beacons. These places are good for walking/hiking! And don't forget to have a look at the small villages there, which I think are really nice.

What I would add is that the cities might be a better choice for October. It can be very bleak on the coast and dangerous up the mountains during the late autumn and winter!!
I would recommend you check my VT Cardiff, Newport and Swansea pages, but then that would be advertising ;-)

anything here is to make advertising for places.... isn't it... sorry I don't want to disturb this thread. But aaaarrgh you are right, lots of activities depend on the weather. Vigi, you should be flexible on your plans, but that is something travellers are... assume it might rain.

Walesw has much to offer, although I'd advise against serious mountain-walking in the autumn; it can be extremely dangerous. Low-level walking is fine, as long as you remember to bring waterproofs and good footwear. North Wales has beautiful mountains (Snowdonia), many Norman castles and interesting small towns/ villages. Caernarfon castle in particular is well worth visiting, but Beaumaris and Conwy are also excellent. The Lleyn Peninsula is beautiful (main town Pwchelli), but you will need a car to really explore it. Mid-Wales also has much beautiful scenery, mountains and interesting small towns/ villages. South Wales is industrial in parts, although Pembrokeshire is wonderful (St David's is a lovely, tiny 'city'), and the Brecon Beacons are wildly (and potentially dangerously) beautiful. The South Wales mining valleys have their own charm, and the 'Big Pit' mining museum offers an excellent insight into how that industry was destroyed.
Without a car your choice of places to visit will be more limited, but you will still find more than enough to enjoy.
www.visitwales.com will offer some useful ideas, www.nationalrail.co.uk gives train timetables and fares and www.traveline-cymru.org.uk will help with local bus timetables etc.

I would aggree 100%with what has been said about not venturing out onto mountainsides in bad weather. However, I frequently go to Wales at precisely that time of year, and I have often been very lucky with the weather then. The thing to watch though (apart form bad weather) is that dusk falls early in the Autumn, so, even if the weather is very fine and the forecast good, you should not set off late in the day for remote places.
Pembrokeshire, as already recommended, and also the area around Cardigan Bay would be good at that time of year. Also the border country, perhaps staying in or near Hay on Wye, which has a lot of interesting things going on (esp if you like books) in town if the weather is poor (but isn't as busy as some of the cities).

Well, you let us know what type of food/drink you like and we'll pick the appropriate venue... ;-)
As for where to stay I would suggest: Medium Budget: Big Sleep (I have a tip on it in my Cardiff page); Low/Extra Low: NosDa/Cardiff Backpackers http://www.nosda.co.uk/ Both are central!

Yes, would love to have a VT meeting.
What do you suggest with midium - low budget but a nice place to meet and chat?
I will know where I stay one week in advance, most likely in the city centre.

How about the Goat Major pub ( http://www.sabrain.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=pub.PubDetails&PubID=42D1434E-65B8-F208-58EC9F7EA891E019 ) at the top of the High St near the castle - we will have plenty of meal choices from there...
