Cambodia vs Myanmar
Posted: Tue October 1, 2002 06:00 AM UTC
Hi! I'm currently planning on a short trip (about 4/5 days) to either of these 2 countries. Has anyone been there recently (last 3 months) & is it safe to venture on my own there (ie travel solo)? If given a choice, which country would you choose to visit first & why?
Thanks for all suggestions!

hi
i would go for Myanmar. The traveling possiblities in Cambodia are not very wide. Usually 95% of tourists to Cambodia focus on the Angkor complex. In Myanmar you can see much more and it is much safer. Still in Cambodia alot of mines.

i travelled through cambodia this february by bicycle and found it to be safe and extremely freindly.
apart from ankhor wat, there is not many sights in cambodia, but thats part of the attraction for me.
it´s still very untouched and people are very curious about foreigners.

Many people are boycotting travel to Myanmar, because of the repressive nature of the military dictatorship there... I think Cambodia is the worthier recipient of your tourist dollars!

hi

I have been there on both places. Both countries are great to visit and I felt save in both. For 4-5 days I would prefer going to Cambodia as you need definitely more time for Burma.

For 4 days I would suggest to stay at one place (Angkor Wat).

If you prefer to visit Myanmar (you have to change their 200$ in FEC what you wont need for 4 days) I would recommend either to stay in Mandalay and to visit Amarapura, Sagain, Ava or to visit Bagan and Mount Popa.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback.

Thanks, Beatrice. It's US$200, right? Do you have to spend it all?

you need not spend all your FEC's that you have exchanged.

you can buy the US$ back at the airport when you leave the Myanmar or at the local currency exchange booths - you defintely get better rates at the market.

May I surf a bit on your question ?

Sorry to "use" you, ;-)
I should be in the area next november. I wonder how safe it is to travel by bus from Aranyaprathet, Thailand, to Siem Reap, near Angkor ? I read it was unwise to drive by night on road 6 in Cambodia. But since one have to get a new bus in Cambodia, it seems unclear if a bus will be avalaible in daylight after crossing the Thailand/Cambodia border. So, what would be your advice ?
Thank you all for your time :-)
Yvon

Angkor Wat & Co

Hi, I have only been to Cambodia, but considering your limited time of tavel I would also say, go to Cambodia. If you have the budget to fly, you could go to Angkor and Phnom Penh at the same time. If you have to go overland, just focus on the surroundings of Siem Reap (I stayed there for 5 nights) and enjoy the temples on different days... So the trip doesn't become an exhausting one.
For Myanmar, which is top on my list, I guess you will need at least 2 or 3 weeks to see only a bit of its splendour.
Nevertheless have a good time. Cambodia is a wonderful (and safe) country with very friendly people.

I have not been to Myanmar but I was in Cambodia in March (not 3 months like you had asked but fairly recent). I really enjoyed myself! Since you only have 4 or 5 days the Siem Reap - Angkor Wat area would be Great. Siem Reap is cool town. Easy walking around town but to get out to Angkor and the other temples you would need transportation but it is easily arranged depending what style you want to use. And it is very affordable. I would say the area is very safe.I hope to be in Myanmar in March of 2003.

about the $200 in FEC's. At the counter the first thing they asked was how much I wanted to change. In the end I changed $50 together with a $1 "present" (of course the receipt sasy $200). Another traveller brought a lipstick, enough for changing nothing. And so on, not many travellers i've met changed $200 into FEC's.
