The parts of Oxford that I would consider worth seeing could be done in 3 hours. It depends how many shops you want to hit whilst you are there, or how many historic buildings etc etc. The centre of Oxford isnt that big and its all easily walkable.

Though I grew up in Oxford, Kaliopa (Sanja of Macedonia) has a good summary on it!
Coaches are ok, trains are quicker.. u'll be there in 1 hour max. 3-5 hours are enough though.
Fares & timetables can be viewed at:
www.nationalexpress.co.uk (coaches)
www.tfl.co.uk (trains)
Have fun!

You'll have time for a wander round the colleges in the centre of Oxford (just seeing the outsides), and perhaps along by the river too. Maybe pop into a pub for a drink/ meal. Possibly a whip-round the Ashmolean ground floor. It will take about 10 minutes to walk to town from the station (where I think the coaches stop, though I may be wrong).

Everyone is different in how fast they like to do or see things. Pick one or two things that you think will appeal to you. The Bodleian library, Christ Church meadow, Magdalene College, Ashmolean Museum and the Botanical Gardens are personal favourites (I spent part of my childhood in Oxford.) But choose one or two things only.
The Turf Tavern is a good place to stop for a quick drink.
By coach, bear in mind that you can run into severe traffic snarl ups. there has recently been MAJOR roadworks at a roundabout just outside Oxford that has caused big probs. So allow for delays on your schedule.

Oh, the coach stops - there are different companies but I think all of the stop in the High St. Just beyond Magdalene Bridge and that is a good place to get off.

Hi 'Sweety'!
I chkd out megabus thinking they offer 1 UKP tix to anywhere, but this is not the case.
Equally, nationalexpress.co.uk also advertise rates from 1 UKP, so worth chkg with them?
All the best

The bus I normally get stops at about 4 or 5 places before Gloucester Green (the bus station.) I wold think most companies stop in the High St and/or St Aldates, both could be slightly more convenient. Though you won't be far away from anything at Gloucester Green.

The buses most people get are the Oxford Tube and The X90. They both go every 15 mins or so during the day so there is no need to book, but they cost a bit more than £1! Normally roughly £7 to £12 return I think, depending on what time of the day you are travelling.
Personally I think Oxford is worth at least a whole day (especially as you might get held up in roadworks on the way on the coach - I tend to go on the train, but that is about £20 return now). There are lots of cool places to visit, and good pubs for a drink and places to eat etc.
Hope you have a good time (assuming you haven't already been!).

Oxford is pretty small and if you're not too picky about seeing all of Oxford, you can get the major sites in pretty quickly. We're talking central Oxford, the Radcliffe Camera area, a few colleges and a pub or two. 3-5 hours is pretty good in my opinion, but of course, to really appreciate Oxford you'll need much longer than that.
And I strongly second the Turf Tavern suggestion above. :-) Coming back, if you haven't booked a ticket, I think it'll cost about 10 pounds (more or less..) to catch the Oxford tube or Oxford Express back to London.
