Lake District National Park Travel Forum

Me and my wife are off to the Lake District for a long weekend, this weekend! (Fri 30th June to Tue 4th July).

We are staying at Far Sawrey on Lake Windemere.

Is there anything nearby we just shouldn't miss? Fancy hiring a electric launch for a trip on one of the lakes, but which one? Also, we are not walkers but it seems such a shame not to take in some scenery, any reccomendations for novices?

It does seem a shame not to take in some of the countryside in a walk. There is a little lane not far from the Sawrey Hotel that takes you north up onto Claife Heights and passes two or three very beautiful small lakeland tarns on the way. A mixed walk with some open views and woodland. You can drop down to Wray and walk back south along the lake shore (footpath not road) lovely and quiet with great views across the lake. You end up at the crossing point of the Windermere ferry which you can catch as a foot passenger and then across to Bowness for stroll or instead walk back up the road/hill to Far Sawrey and a well-earned pint in the Claife Crier bar of the Sawrey Hotel.

Or alternatively take a walk up Latterbarrow, just outside Hawkshead. Both walks involve a slight climb but nothing too strenuous and very well worth the effort. You will need to find some more detailed instructions for either walk when you get there but local hotels and/or tourist information should help with these and many other walks in the area.
