| Dingle | Drive Dingle Peninsula or Ring of Kerry - Pick one or the other... Posted: Thu June 29, 2006 04:28 PM UTC
We will be traveling to Ireland in Oct. and would like to know if we should skip the Ring of Kerry for a more manageable drive of the Dingle Peninsula. Time is really not an issue, but if our experience will be similar with several hours less in the car, then I would choose to use those other hours for more productive items like pub crawling.

it is hard to compare both rings !
Ring of Kerry will for sure be full of cars & heavy buses and about half of the road (mostly in the north) is not worth the trouble. The Ring of Kerry makes sense, when you like to see Skellig Islands : http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1ffe4/482ce/ and Staigue Fort : http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/13a950/ and of course you also see some great landscapes. Dingle is a lot more quiet, buses will mostly not be able to drive the smaller roads etc.

I've done the Ring of Kerry, but not the Dingle Peninsula so I can't speak for it. I think the Ring of Kerry was quite beautiful and very relaxing, I would definately consider doing it if you have the time.

I've done both.
If I were to choose one to do again, it would be the Dingle peninsula.

I've done both as well. I would agree that I prefer Dingle but my ill will toward Kerry has more to do with the summer crowds - stop and go bumper to bumper buses, people and rookie left handed drivers. I've done the Dingle drive twice, once in the summer and once in November. A little busier in summer, but not much. And even tho it was November - the sun shone every day.
And - Dingle has some great authentic pubs

It's not that hard to drive around the Ring of Kerry as a rookie left hand driver...it is more difficult to drive in the cities than the slow 20 mph country roads.

I agree about driving in the cities being harder than either ring. Had 2 near misses - both on roundabouts - in the larger towns. Thanks goodness for Irish Whiskey to calm the nerves!
