Niagara-on-the-Lake Mosquitos and the weather!
Posted: Wed June 28, 2006 03:14 PM UTC
Hi everybody

We're visiting NOTL for 2 weeks in July. Can anyone say if there's a mozzie problem? How do you "locals" cope with them - can you recommend anything to keep 'em from biting, and to drive them away when we're sitting out at night?

Also, how has your weather been recently? Humid? Warm in the evenings?

There's nothing like getting it straight from people who are there!
Thanks all.

Hi,

For mosquitos you need to wear insect repellent. Anything you buy will work fine, as long as it has "Deet" in it. You will find lots of choices at Walmart, Canadian Tire, and also most gas stations and convenience stores, although it will be more expensive at a gas station or convenience store.

Mosquitos are worst at sunrise and sunset - the heat of the day tends to make them disappear. At these times of the day, make sure you are wearing pants and a long sleeved shirt and spray exposed areas with the repellent. Don't risk going without the repellent, as West Nile is a possible threat if you get a bite.

Just spent the weekend in St. Catharines, it's right next to NOTL. No problem with bugs. The weather has been warm and a little humid. But the odd rain shower fixes the problem. This is the perfect time to visit. Unless you are sitting outside in a park at dusk I would not worry about the bug issue. Have a great vacation.

I agree with Halin; you won't have a problem. NOTL is a built-up area. The only places in that latitude of North America with mosquito problems in July will be wooded areas next to water (the treed neighbourhoods on the edge of Lake Ontario don't count). Locals don't even think about mosquitos in July.
