Hi everyone,
I`m planning to move to la ciudad de Guatemala. One of the international schools there is offering me a job for 2 years. However, I`m not sure about the salary: They pay 3500 Quetzales per month. Living i.e. in zone 10: Is that enough to make a relatively nice and safe living? What are the prices for appartments? Thanks for any information! Saludos! |

I have no idea about costs and salaries, but Guatemala is a fabulously interesting place. I'm sure it will be quite an experience. Try posting your question on Lonelyplanet.com in the Central American forum. Many people there are very experienced in all things pertaining to Guaetmala. Good luck!

I assume that they are paying your travel expenses for a two year contract, otherwise, the salary does seem a bit low for such a long commitment. Try to bargain for a single year contract with a renewal option. Surviving a horrible work situation for a year is on thing, to do it for two years is unthinkable.

That will pay you around $478 US per month as of right now. Zone 10 is the Zona Viva, which is reasonably safe and has a fun nightlife you could go out into, but it would cost more than average Guatemalan rents to stay there. Even its one hostel can be described as "stylish," but you could arrange to stay there for $14 a night while looking, and Manuel would probably cut you a big break for a longer stay. It has full kitchen access, is close to a grocery and both pricey and inexpensive restaurants and has free Internet. See: http://www.mayaworld.net/xamanek/
