We will be in the Dolomites in a few weeks, and would like recommendations on Charming/memorable/don't miss this place type hotel to stay at for 2 nights.

We are driving, so it doesn't have to be directly in Bolzano. Tell us your favorite. as always, the less costly the better.

Also advise if you know an unforgettable place to eat, and favorite wine for the area.

Thanks all you wanderers.

I am so glad you asked! I went on holiday with my fiance to Bolzano last year, and we booked into a hotel called Hotel Thuille. DO NOT STAY THERE! It was a nightmare! It wasn't a hotel, just an apparment block, so bascially you were staying in someone's spare bedroom. It felt like staying a student place, the furniture was old, the carpets bare etc. After one night we said we were checking out, and they got really cross with us. In the meantime, I mislaid the keys and the mother of the owner started screaming at us, threatening to call the police, she had me in tears! Plus the price we were quoted went up when we paid.

Instead we stayed in a lovely family run hotel, with ensuite bathrooms and mountains views. The place was clean and the staff really lovely. That was called Hotel Feichter. Details: 39100 Bolzano (BZ) - 15, v. Grappoli
tel: 0471 978768
fax: 0471 974803
email: hotel.feichter@dnet.it

I'd really recommend Feichter. It was a few Euros more expensive than the other place, but a million times better!

I booked into this place but didn't end up going (YES I cancelled the reservation in advance). I chose it because it has a "wellness center" that had steam rooms, sauna, hydrotherapy, etc... at no extra charge. The wellness center isn't open during the summer, but if you're staying there in September or later it should be open.

Last year I spent some days in Bressanone/Brixen,about 30 minutes away from Bolzano. I stayed in the Hotel Gruener Baum. It's part of the Best Western group and consists of several houses, all close together. It was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed.Lovely room, great view, excellent breakfast and a very friendly and helpful staff. Also the hiking area started right behind the hotel.
