Lake District National Park Travel Forum

Hi everyone. I'll be visiting the Lake District for a few days in August - on a quick break from London. I want to hike; I don't want to rent a car. Where should I stay? Ideally I'd take the train to Kendall or thereabouts and then take a bus, perhaps?, to my base village. I'd like to hike around Helvellyn if possible, but am open to suggestions for other destinations. Thanks.

Keswick is a good base, not least for its range of eating, drinking and other diversions as well as accessibility to good walks. A good day outing from Keswick is to get the bus to Thirlspot (on the road to Grasmere), hike from there up Helvellyn and on to Dollywagon Pike and on even further to end up at Grasmere. From there you can bus back to Keswick after buying some gingerbread at Sarah Nelson's. You can also do Scafell Pike from Keswick (again after a short bus ride) and loads of other good routes in and around Borrowdale.
