Anchorage Downtown Restaurants
Posted: Tue June 20, 2006 05:35 PM UTC
My girlfriend and I are heading to Anchorage for a couple aof weeks in July. We're just wondering whether Humpys and Bernies are still a good choice for a downtown restaurant?

We can do posh or regular places so any other downtown tips would be great. What about Club Paris, Orso, Alaska Salmon Chowder House and the Glacier Brewhouse...any good?

Is the Sourdoughs Mining Restaurant as cheesey as it sounds or is it worth a visit?

Thanks for your help...really looking forward to the trip!

Humpy's is better then Bernies.

Marx Brothers is a nice choice of rest. about $35 dollars a plate. excellent food. ceaser salad is too die for.

Club paris for a good steak.

Orso is alright for an italian place.

AK Chowder place sucks

Brewhouse is nice.

Sourdough sucks.

If you want a good riendeer dog go to MA Dogs, on the corner of F street and 4th ave, just look for the line at lunch good stuff. Support a local.

Any other questions just ask.

All the rest. listed are downtown except Sourdough.

If you want the best pizza go to "The Moose's Tooth" but it is in midtown. Well worth the trip.

I agree with Ak Hermit - although sucks is a little harsh.

Some other downtown spots I like:
Simon & Seaforts - great sunsets (although that isn't until after 11PM in the summer)
Fletcher's in the Captain Cook. Great food in a cosy, classy spot.
Also in the Cook is the Crow's Nest - on the top floor of Tower 3. Very classy and very spendy - but they have a new chef that is getting rave reviews.
Sullivan's in the 5th ave mall is the alternative to Club Paris for steak - also great martinis. Club Paris gets booked up, especially on weekends.
Jen's in midtown is a great experience. Go a little later when Jens cranks up the stereo - lots of fun and great food.
Corsair's downtown is a classy place that is making a comeback.
Marx Brothers still the best food downtown.

Problem with Humpy's is the cigarette smoke. Didn't realize how bad it was until I quit. So I vote for Bernie's over Humpy's these days.

Have fun!
Rick

Thanks for all the help. Good tip re the smoking. What can I expect the bill to be for a dinner out in these places. Are we looking at $70 each for a 3 course with wine, $50 for steak and beer?

At Marx Brothers you will spend $11 a person for Van's famous salad (well worth it)and then about $35 for your main meal and then wine about $30-$40 a bottle. You can easly spend about $200 for a great meal but you are on holiday.

What are you doing in Alaska beside Anchorage?

I have done all of those things. Katmai is one of my favorite places in the world, just sitting and watching the bears is breath taking. You are going to have agood time.

Agreed on all of the above info, but wanted to add 2 more restaurant recommendations:
1. The Bear Tooth (off Spenard, not downtown) has the best value for a meal in town, great beer too (it's a Moose's Tooth spinoff)
2. Mick's On The Inlet has IMHO the best upscale food in Anchorage right now, with excellent service as well (Only you won't get the inlet views you get at Simon & Seaforts or the top-of-the-hotel views you get at the Crow's Nest)

FYI, Jens in Midtown is a real Anchorage locals' hotspot, and he's a super chef too; the wine bar is a fun slice of life, not quite like the crowd you'll see at wine bars in the rest of America!

Thanks for all the great tips. Starting to thinkl about packing now...will it be shorts weather in July or should I leave them at home and pack another pair of pants?

Bring your shorts & your longer pants both. Prepare to dress in layers. If it's cloudy & rainy, it can be quite cool, like 50F or so. But when the sun shines in the summer time, it may be well up into the 80's F.

Restaurant update: DON'T bother with Mick's On The Inlet anymore, the original chef left, and the service & food have both tumbled into mediocrity. Boo-hoo.

We had a brilliant two weeks. Everything went according to plan, except for the weather cancelling our final cruise from Whittier. The bears at Brooks falls were amazing and were definitely the highlight. Plenty of pictures taken and hopefully they'll be up on VT shortly.

In Anchorage we went to various places, Humpy’s was a good bar with decent beer and food. Also went to Sullivan’s and Simon and Seafort for a more upmarket dinner. The Glacier Brewhouse was also good, although aimed at the cruise passengers. Took a bike ride over the costal trail and bumped into some moose. Hiked up Wolverine trail and again saw more moose.

Thanks for everyone help.

Anchorage Moose & Squirrel
Posted: Fri August 11, 2006 06:05 PM UTC
Seeing moose up here is almost like seeing squirrels in Maryland anymore, they are EVERYwhere. Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip, and that you discovered Humpy's Ale House - it's a local favorite, always a fun place to stop.

Looking forward to seeing your new VT pages, let us know when you've got them up!

So what's the deal with this "jenetcamara" leaving this exact same message on every Anchorage forum thread? Is this some scammer or does he/she actually have something to say? Did anyone actually e-mail him/her? I love the frauds on VT.

I didn't pursue it. Assummed it was the usual "I have millions and need your bank account to get it out of the country".

My girlfriend and I are making a similar trip the first week of March. I'm doing the winter thing though because I'm taking a flight to Bettles to check out the northern lights and to pop the question. Can anyone give me some pointers on a winter visit. All I have now is to watch the start of the race.

Thanks!
