| Livorno | Livorno to Cinque Terre Posted: Mon June 19, 2006 02:31 AM UTC
Docking in Civ for one day - considering a day trip up to Cinque Terre. Can't find much info about traveling there, and if it is a fun day trip.
Ship offers a cruise - anyone done something in this area that they would recommend? |

Taking the train up to La Spezia from Civitavecchia is a minimum of 3.25 hours, and the Cinque Terre are a little beyond that - actually, only a few minutes, but you have to consider the connection time. See www.trenitalia.com .
So, figure that you have 8 hours on trains for the round trip...I can't believe that this is an effective use of your time. Sure, the Cinque Terre are reputed to be pretty, but to spend 8 hours of a 12 hour layover on trains doesn't seem to make sense. There are plenty of other places a lot closer...tell us what you're looking for and we'll see if we can help... Bill

Hi,
I think that Mac got confused on the city(the ships, also dock near Rome), but he would have instructed you to take the train from Livorno to LaSpezia(www.trenitalia.com). From there you can transfer to the local train to the 5 villages of the Cinque Terre(www.cinqueterreonline.com).The trip with the changes for an early morning departure takes 2hr30min. It's possible to go to the first village then take the ferry boat and see the CT by ship and maybe visit one other village if time permits. You would have to decide depending on what time your ship departs again from Livorno. Buon Viaggio!!!

You may be right...when I read "Docking in Civ for one day" in the original post, I assumed that the poster meant "Civitavecchia", the so-called "port of Rome", rather than Livorno, as the title said. But I suppose that the original poster may have meant to write "Liv" instead of "Civ"...a good reason not to abbreviate things unnecessarily, huh?
