hi...I am thinking about basing myself in Alexandria for a year but am told I would need a car...which would be expensive
any guidance about car prices and buying, gratefully received

Generally speaking you don't need a car in Alexanderia. The orientation is very simple as it hugs the coast line for 30 kilometers. There is a an Ancient metro line that go east to west and there is a train that covers areas in eastern Alexanderia that are not covered by the metro. Taxi is very very cheap (cheaper than Cairo). You will suffer less from Haggeling with taxis in Alexanderia than Cairo. Tell me where are you gonna live in Alex and how is your daily commute and I might be able to advice you further


If you must rent a car (which I always do in cairo, but not in Alexanderia), a resonable old one with functioning A/C and radio will be rented for 100 LE/day. Gas is very cheap. I used to fill a 4 cylinder Daewoo for 33 LE.

In Cairo there is a used car market every sunday at Madinat Nasr (Alhayy al a'sher or 10th neighbourhood?) near almashroo' alswisree (The swiss housing project). You'll need to know about cars and you need to have an Egyptian friend who know prices and will be able to bargin. It is a major road and I think it is called Zakir Hussain but I am not sure. I can give direction on how to get there.
