Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Egham Day Trips
Posted: Thu June 15, 2006 09:12 PM UTC
I will be in Egham the week of July 23. I have been to London many times, however, have not travelled much outside London proper. Can you suggest some day trips reachable by train or public transportation that would be of interest?
Thanks!
Candy

Hi Candy,

a similar question was asked very recently in the London forum, you should find it quite easily and see lots of suggestions for day trips :)

Hello Candy,
Hampton Court Palace can be visited by train and a reduced price ticket may be obtained. The railway station is just the other side of the River Thames - a pleasant walk over the bridge. Rowing boat hire in the vicinity.

Royal Horticultural Society Wisley Gardens can be reached by a link bus service from Woking railway station. The service only operates very limited hours. Members only admitted on Sundays.

You probably know about Thorpe Park theme park, as it is almost in Egham.

Hire a boat on the River Thames, or take a steamer trip.

Small electric launches available for hire in "off the beaten track" location in Chertsey.

If you fancy country walking and public transport have a look at the Surrey Hills, a picturesque area south of London between Guildford and Dorking. Catch a train to Guildford Station, then change for Dorking, you go through lots of little stations in the countryside, and could walk or visit pubs etc. Also for something different Llama trekking!

The explorer bus service runs at weekends, and provides public transport to several tourist attractions. Note Dorking has at least 2 railway stations. You can visit Denbies Vinyard (good tourist facilities). Newlands Corner is car park with cafe, lots of motorcycles stop here.

Hope some of this is useful. Enjoy England.

All I can say is that if you have seen all there is to see within London then well done. Other than that, save the train fare and look a bit deeper.

Hello again,
Egham Station provides reasonable travel links to nearby Windsor. Travel time about half an hour with one change will get you to Windsor & Eton riverside station. Lots of tourist interest here - Eton College, Windsor Castle and the River Thames.
Also Datchet Station with one train change and only 20 mins travel time might be of interest. There is good self drive electric day boat hire available from a boatyard in Datchet - you could take a picnic and cruise up to Windsor, or down to Runnymede (venue for signing of Magna Carta).

Note: I do not know how close the station is to the river.
For rail travel information you can look at:
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
Further to my previous comments about the Surrey Hills area:
The bus link is based on Dorking(main line) station, not Dorking Deepdene or Dorking West. You can walk between main line and Deepdene only about 5 mins.
The range of tourist attractions from the bus is good, with 3 National Trust properties (historic houses), I think Polesden Lacey is the best one. Your rail link to Dorking is not so good, about one and a half hours or more. Probably best to go Egham to Wokingham, change at Wokingham and catch the Wokingham to Dorking Deepdene (it goes through Guildford and is rather scenic from then until Dorking).
All the best.
