Arles Arles + accommodation
Posted: Thu June 19, 2003 03:30 PM UTC
Will be in Provence in mid-July. Would it be wise to have accommodation booked prior to arriving or ok to find reasonable places to stay on a day to day basis?
Thanks,
Linda

I think it depends on what sort of accomodations you'd like. If you want to stay in 3*** or 4**** places, I'd book ahead. It's a very popular time of year for tourists. There are some great hotels in Provence - and some towns are quite small without too many available rooms.

Last time I was in Arles, I was able to pick up a room in one of the small hotels near the station, without booking.

Consider that Arles is a major bullfighting centre and can get busy, though it's a remarkably un-touristy city, despite its great historical and cultural attractions.

www.accor.com is a good place to find accommodation at all price levels, though they're all pretty much identikit hotels. I don't really like suggesting the big chains in preference to the small family places, but Accor is a first rate operation and easy to deal with.

Last year I stayed at the Hotel Amphitheatre in Arles. In the center of everything and cheap. With the money you would save by staying there I would have a dinner at L'olivier (best restaurant in Arles).
