| Dalian | Finding a local student guide Posted: Tue June 13, 2006 07:27 PM UTC
I will be visiting DaLian later in late August for 10 days, and have been recommended by a business associate to do what he did in Beijing, which was to employ a guide full time during his stay. That way you can see more and avoid the worry of getting lost or stranded without being able to read any signs. By UK standards it cost next to nothing apparently, (and the modest tip she got at the end was worth several months salary)
However I have read elsewhere that if you are not careful you can end up with a guide who is in league with restaurants and souvenir shops, and takes backhanders while you get ripped off. So, any advice please about the best way to find an honest student guide? Thanks very much. |

My best advice is to go to this website www.dalianxpat.com and post what you need. I'm sure you'll find plenty of English major students willing to help you (even for free)
As for taking you to certain restaurants and shops, most of times it's just difference of standards between Westerners and Chinese. Check in advance what places you are interested in and tell your guide to take you there. On that website you'll also find some info on restaurants and bars in Dalian. Any question about the city, feel free to contact me.

Thanks for your kind answer. I did as you suggested, and so far have had a reply from one kind soul who has offered the services of a friend.
I'm still nervous though for the reasons I gave before; I was kind of hoping there would be a well known route into the University or something to find guides on a semi-formal basis. Is it such an unusual request? I haven't been overrun with offers. Is there a forum or bulletin board that students would use? I guess it would be in chinese though. Sorry to bother you with this. Thanks
