Porec Prices?
Posted: Tue June 13, 2006 07:10 PM UTC
Just a few quick questions.

In August, we'll be visiting Porec for a week. Greatly looking forward to it.

Q1. Are any sights of interest within walking distance of the town centre? Or will we be better of hiring ar car? Which brings me to my next question.

Q2. Car hire cost for, say, 2 days?

Q3. How much for an averagely priced beer?

Q4. How much for a decent (ish) meal? Not fast food and not super posh!

Q5. Is it worth going to Slovenia for a day trip? If so, where do you suggest?

Cheers!

The old town itself was the highlight of Porec. I don't remember much else that was within walking distance only the hotel complexes up and down the cost. Cannot comment on cost of car hire but I would get one then you could vist Motovun and other hill top towns in the Istria interior as well as other places on the coast. You must visit Rovinj and Pula although a bus could take you there. Rovinj is much more picturesque than Pula. I enjoyed an afternoon in the old town of Labin with evening in the seaside town of Rabac close by. There is a nature reserve with some great swimming south of Pula which you can only get to by car which I found out from VT members. In short then, save Slovenia for another trip, there is plenty to see in Istria. The Brijuni National Park is supposed to be great although we ran out of time for this, Limski Canal - good boat trip.

Decentish meal - £8 to £12 (12 to 16 Euros) plus drinks - more expensive than other parts of Croatia we found

For a great place to eat go to 'Pizza Nono' on the street called Zagrebacka(opposite tourist info office). It doesn't just do pizzas and the food is excellent and cheap. Huge portions (generally choose one dish between two of you unless you're real hungry!!) and a great atmosphere - suggest you book though as very busy with locals. Order the house jug of wine which is very good and don't bother with fancy bottles from other countries. Family run business who are very friendly, speak English aswell if your Croatian isn't so good. If you are wanting something a bit more upmarket but still a good price try the restaurant inside the tower as you are walking down into the old part of the town on the road called 'Decumanus' - just on the left as you hit the cobbles (sorry can't remember name of restaurant). Prices are a bit more expensive but still very good and half the price of what you would spend for the same in England. Smarter dress required than 'Pizza Nono' but still can be smart casual. Beer is generally cheap so I wouldn't worry about that too much - just make sure you go to the bars the locals go to and you'll not pay too much. If you like wine then go for that option as that's generally very good and cheap.
