| Zell am See | Day trips from Zell Am See Posted: Tue June 13, 2006 04:32 PM UTC
Hi Guys,
I am visiting Zell Am See in Aug for 4 nights. I am planning a couple of days in and around Zell Am See. One day drive to GrossGLockner Road to Heiligenblut. I have one day in hand. Is there any nice day trip to any beautiful village/place which is recommended and can be done in one day. Is it possible to do a day trip Hallstatt from Zell Am See Thanks in Advance. Regards, RahuL... |

I did a day trip to Hallstatt from Salzburg by train. It is further from Zell am See. So I think it is possible but a little tight to do it in a day by train. I am not sure about driving though. Another interesting place that is closer to Zell am See is Werfen. There are two main attractions in Werfen - the Eisriesenwelt Höhle (Giant Ice Caves) and Hohenwerfen Fortress. The ice caves are the largest accessible ice caves in the world.
Enjoy!

Thanks a lot for your reply. I would certainly enquire about Werfen.
By car Hallstatt is around 97 km and it should take around 1hr 15 mins according to one of the website. So I hope it should be fine. Thanks anyways.

Just to mention a few things to look into;
Werfen is a beautiful town, the castle is interesting and the veiw from the ice cave is spectacular. A mild hike is required. Also in the area, Lichtensteinklamm is in neighboring St. Johann im Pongau. Nice flat walk for this one. There is also Krimml Falls. The tallest waterfall in Europe if I am not mistaken. Be ready for a steep hike to really appreciate it fully. Quaint farm/resturant at the top. You could check out Bad Gastein. A beautiful town with the river falling through it. Nice shops, resturants and taverns.

I was there about 8 years ago. It`s very nice, I think we went to Salzburg and there were some other trips to Bavaria.
The Eagle`s nest at Berchtesgaden. The Nazi`s built it as a 50th birthday present for Hitler. Remember to take the cable car up the mountain from Zell am See. I think beer is more potent at higher altitudes. :-)

Which cable car you are talking about? Is it the one in Zell Am See itself? I would definitely take one. Do you have any information about Gosausee Lake. Planning to go there for one day as well. Thanks again. cheers.

Yes,
there is a cable car in Zell am See. About a 5 minute walk up hill from the railway station. Very handy!
