well, train Moscow-Kazan is EUR 25-30 one way and in any way it is cheaper and trains go by night that make the way enough comfortable (you take train 19.00 around and arrive in 8.00).
but of cause if you don't want to change flight to train in Moscow, get plane. yeah, Lufthansa has flights to Kazan as well as some local operators. Don't know Edinburgh-Moscow but Moscow-Kazan' is from EUR 75 by Syberia and Tatarstan aircrafts (chec www.s7.ru)
