| Cambridge | looking for cheap accommodation Posted: Mon June 12, 2006 09:37 AM UTC
Hi I am a student in Australia and travelling to Cambridge from 10 july to 29 july. Can anyone tell me how to look for a cheap weekly room. Do the University colleges offer rooms during summer? do students going overseas during summer offer rooms on reasonable rates?
Thanks |

Can't find any information on college rooms; suspect they may be filled up with summer students/ conference visitors etc and not available to ordinary visitors.
Try this link for the Cambridge Youth Hostel; www.yha.org.uk/hostel/hostelpages/86.html You could also google the UK pages only on www.google.co.uk for 'cambridge cheap accommodation'.......you'll get lots of links. Hope this helps a bit.

I stayed in Cambridge YHA in December 2004. Had to pay £18.50/night, which I thought was quite a lot for a somewhat sad place.

Accommodation in the UK is not cheap, particularly in popular tourist towns like Cambridge, and especially in high season (July/ August). Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
The Youth Hostel Association was set up many years ago (Thirties?)to provide clean, basic accommodation for (originally) young walkers and cyclists. It does not pretend to offer anything but a safe, clean place to stay (with breakfast).

Last year my son was in Cambridge for several weeks and the place where he worked had arranged for him to stay in a dorm. Nice room, private bath, 450 GBP a month.
When I went to see him at the end of July, I wasn't able to find anything I could afford, so we stayed outside of Cambridge. My daughters had gone earlier and were able to get rooms in the youth hostel. Central, no luxury of course, but nice rooms. They didn't have a private bath. If you plan to stay there book as soon as possible! Cambridge is packed with language students in summer. Enjoy your stay.
