Garda Driving holiday to Garda September
Posted: Sun June 11, 2006 06:36 PM UTC
Hi My family are going to Lake Garda in September. We would prefer to book accomodation on the way, maybe having the first night pre booked.
Is this a bad idea? Any good tips on which is/are the best towns to stay in?

a good (first) stop could be Desenzano or Sirmione (lovely) or Peschiera.

You should make an effort to go to Verona - e-mail my friend ferderica at info@l'ospite.com and she will accomodate you.

Definately reccomend Malcesine. Try the Hotel Erica. it has a website and it's good value and friendly and has car parking which can be awkward around the lake. Malcesine is for me the pick of the places around the lake and has good ferry connections to Limone and Riva. There is a cable car up the lakeside too. The Erica is just off the main road whilst Malcesine has lots of narrow streets and pedestrian areas to wander around. It's a good base and worth more than an one night/first night destination. I agree it's best to get the first night sorted as hotels can be a pain to book on a "here we are" basis. I think booking several days will be sensible and with the car a single base is worth it. Youu can travel to other places like Verona from there. Trains and buses are not an option. Check out Malcesine and I'm sure you'll enjoy it even if you stop somewhere else.

Sirmione is the most beautiful, Riviera is the most expensive, Malcesine offers more options like visiting Monte Baldo, Bardolino offers the most beautiful beach resorts and good wine, Desenzano is very popular destination, but I recommend Lazise. Do not miss Verona, it is a must see and only 20km from the southern part of the lake.
