| Zermatt | Zermatt for oldies! Not too old but a few health problems Posted: Fri June 9, 2006 08:38 PM UTC
We are flying to Geneva on 24th June and catching the train to Zermatt and staying at the Alpen Resort Hotel. We are not hikers so just want gentle strolls and scenic train trips. We will be leaving on the 30th.
Any ideas! and also restaurant recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks Julin |

I thought this website was interesting. Some hikes are more robust than others. http://www.zermatt.ch/e/hiking_trails/
I was only there for a short ski trip. Not impressed with Grampi's Pub. I checked on chowhound.com and there was nothing on Zermatt.

| Zermatt | RE: RE: Zermatt for oldies! Not too old but a few health problems Posted: Sat June 10, 2006 06:46 PM UTC Hi! You could take a train ride from Zermatt to Gornergrat,( beautiful place from where you get a nice view of Matterhorn ( depends on visibility ). You can check out the follwoing sites: http://www.mgbahn.ch/en/ http://bergbahnen.zermatt.ch/e/peaks/kleinmatterhorn.html or go to SBB site and type in Zermatt to gornergrat Enjoy!! Regards Kaps

Hi,
If you are staying more than 3 days in Zermatt, it could be a good idea to buy the Zermatt peak pass. This pass is valid on all train/cable cars networks around. Some excursion ideas: 1) Gornergrat Bahn offer you a nice cogwheel trip from Zermatt to the Gornergrat. 2) Cable car ride up to Rothorn is worth to enjoy the best view on the Matterhorn and have a drink/meal to the Rothorn restaurant. 3) Cable car ride to the Klein Matterhorn will offer you a glacier experience. You could also stop at Furi which offer gentle stroll back to Zermatt via Zum See or Blatten (40min), Zmutt or Sunegga offer also good opportunities for walks. Pay attention to the high altitude precautions... Don't forget to acclimatize before going on up to the Klein Matterhorn (3'800m). Please bear in mind that you need plenty of fluids and time to acclimatize when you are at an altitude of over 9,840 feet / 3,000 meters. You will avoid headaches or dizzy feelings. Clothing tips: Warm clothing, a windproof jacket and solid footwear are a must, whatever the time of year. And, of course, don’t forget your sunglasses, sun cream and your cap/hat at these high altitudes. Many other ideas are waiting for you on the VT Zermatt pages. Greetings from the Swiss Alps.

Thanks for all your advise. We had a wonderful time.Took trips on all the trains including Glacier Express and cable cars. The scenery was amazing. The Alpen Resort Hotel lovely.Only bad thing was my handbag was stolen at Visp Railway Station on our way back to Geneva. My camera was in the bag so I lost all my photos including 40 of wild flowers I took on a walk down from Sunnega Paradise. If anyone has flower photos would they email them to me please on june@stracshack.fsnet.co.uk
Some restaurants were lovely, but Grampi's ugh!
