WIll be driving by the area and would like to stop at the castle and park. Would also like to walk up the hill to the castle and around it, but don't really have time for a tour.

Is it possible to walk up to the castle without purchasing the tour tickets?

It's been many years since I was there, but at that time you only bought tickets for the inside tour. Many people were hiking up and around the area.

Was there last year and if i'm not mistaken you buy the tickets from inside and then you have to wait for your number cos there are a lot of people waiting . . . so you can go up to the castle without paying this i'm quite sure of and you can have a view even from the yard inside the castle. You pay for the tour to see the castle from inside. Hope you enjoy it :))

A number of times I've taken friends there and I only joined the tour the first time. I didn't have any problem walking around the castle or up to the bridge while I was waiting for them to finish the tour.

Yes, you can do that. There are roads and trails all over the place. A fun thing to do that is very inexpensive is take a horse and carriage ride up to the castle. You can walk around, visit the bridge and then walk back down.

There is a little village between the two castles (Newschwanstein and Hohenschwangau) with restaurants, snack places, parking and millions of souvenir shops.

You can do a lot without taking the tour.
