Travelling from Lisbon to Lagos........... Posted: Tue June 6, 2006 05:33 PM UTC
Hello there-
My sister and I will be flying into Lisbon, renting a car and travelling to Lagos. If I rent a car at the airport, is there going to be a location in Lagos where I can drop the car off??? Also, I am Portuguese, not fluent in the language but have the basics down. I would like to gain employment in the Algarve. I am not a citizen of Portugal. I have an undergraduate degree in Business and a MAster's in Education. How could I begin looking for employment and do I need a working visa in order to do this. My dad is a citizen of Portugal so could I get dual citizenship w/ the USA and Portugal?

I do not know if I can tell you anything useful except that there are a lot of ex-pats in Lagos from Germany and England, so you will find a lot of people who speak English. Most of the city revolves around tourism, so I don't know what kind of meaningful employment you can find. I have no idea about a work visa, but not having one will limit your job options even more. That being said, I am sure you will meet some ex-pats who will sympathize with you and point you in the right direction. Also, getting dual citizenship is not an easy process and you better make sure that you risk losing your American citizenship if you are able to become a Portugese citizen. Technically, the US does not allow it. And if they find out you took an oath to become a citizen of another country, they may revoke your AMerican citizenship. Check it out.

If your father is a Portuguese citizen, then you are a portuguese citizen too. You don't have to take any oath to be a portuguese citizen. Just be sure and bring your birth certificate, and your father's birth certificate, and it should be a simple process. You may even do that in the US, with the embassy or at any consulates.
With that done, you won't need any visas
