Lhasa Visit to Lhasa
Posted: Sat June 3, 2006 02:06 AM UTC
I'm looking to cross China through Tibet. Is it easier permit/visa wise Khatmandu-Lhasa-Chengdu-Shanghai or Shanghai-Chengdu-Lhasa-Khatmandu? Can I just waltz through the country on my own or do I have to be part of a tour group?
Thanks in advance...

Definitely Shanghai-Chengdu-Lhasa-Kathmandu.
No, you don't need to be part of a group tour if coming by this route.

Myself and 2 other friends will be going on the 17th of June and this is the route chosen. Kathmandu - Lasha - Shangri-la. From Katmandu to lassa we will take a bus, aroun 5 days going through temples and everest camp. A couple of days in Lasha then head to Shangri-la.

As long as you have a chinese visa, you will be able to get the special entry visa to Tibet through a travel agency.

It's actually a Tibet Travel Permit, not a visa.
However, you should also note that your visa to China will be cancelled when you come to Tibet from Nepal; you (and whoever you're travelling with) will be put on a group visa. This poses problems if/when the group splits up after seeing Tibet and certain members of the group want to continue on their own to other parts of China for sightseeing.

Try eco trek at ecotour@wlink.com.np or www.ecotreknepal.com.

You could also try www.greenhilltours.com
These were addresses i picked up when in Khatmandu.
Get Lonely Planets book; they usually have addresses.
