I wouldn't hang out in Centennial Park, although it's fine to walk past. This park is beside City Hall, on Douglas Street near Pandora Avenue. There is a Needle Exchange near Blanshard Street at Cormorant Street, but I've walked past there recently and not seen anyone even mildly unsavoury-looking.

Basically, the street people will leave you alone as long as you don't yell, "Get a job ***!" When someone asks me for change I give them a polite smile and say, "Sorry." I've never had a problem.

In the summer Centenial Square is ho,e to one of our summer long open air music festivals. There are homeless and pan-handlers wherever you go . Some people make a great living at it and have apprtments and homes that the pay for by pan-handling. Mostly, tho, if someone really is in need they wn't harrass you if you say no. people are people so just be polite and you will have no problems.
There are many many buskers and street vendors in town. They are artisans, artits and performance artists. his is how most of them support themselves for the whole yearso feel free to support them.
But, no. There are no specific areas to avoid. If you are down town it is fairly safe. DO, tho, use your commmon sense.
