can any1 tell me the cheapest deal to climb kili...theres 4 of us going,we dont even plan to get the porters,maybe just the guide....how much is the entrance fee for the park anyway?

A significant part of the expense of climbing Kilimanjaro is National Park fees. Effective Jan 1st 2006 the Park fees payable by a visitor of 17 years and over will be $525 for a 5 day Marangu route climb and $635 for a 6 day Marangu climb. The National Park fees for the camping routes of Machame, Rongai, Shira/Lemosho and Umbwe, all of which are generally climbed in 6 or more days, will be $590 for a 6 day climb and $690 for a 7 day climb. These amounts will be increased by a further $10 a night effective July 1st 2006, becoming $640 and $750 respectively. Park fees for citizens of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda and for climbers of 16 years and less and for treks longer than 7 days are available upon inquiry.

Sorry but I do not know what the cheapest deal is. We were very happy with the Marangu Hotel who claim am 80% success rate versus the more typical 25%. The first thing they did was to inspect our gear and then replace any item that did not meet their standards from their extensive storehouse. They even gave us more diamox. Our cost for the Machame route two years ago was about $1000 each, including two nights in their hotel.

My understanding is that the fees are payable at the park entrance in cash, and they do not include any services, except for rescue. As I remember, we had to pay the park fees in cash to the Marangu Hotel who organized our climb, before we started, so that our guides would have the cash at the trail head ranger station.

Oh yes, if you make it to the top, the park rangers do give you a certificate as you exit the park, suitable for framing.

But porters and guides are definitely not included in the park entry fees.
