Bilbao What are your area preferences?
Posted: Tue May 30, 2006 07:36 PM UTC

I've been looking at some options for accommodations in San Sebastian and Bilbao and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend one particular area over another, and also under what names are they normally listed.

What would you recommend for someone looking to stay in a busy /but not overwhelming/ place in close proximity to some of the main streets and/or point of interest. Half an hour of walkind would be close enough for me. :)

Thank you very much !

Both have their attractions and by ALSA bus the connection is about an hour. Bilbao would be my preference and Hotel Sirimiri is close to the river, the arsenal, trams to the new town across the river and RENFE local trains. It has a website and is good value. Bilbao is larger and is a port that is being wonderfully renovated. Casco Viejo (the old town) is connected to the new town by a superb metro that also serves some coastal settlements up to Plentxia. Casco Viejo is full of bars and restaurants mostly basic but serving a variety of local food. The place is full of narrow streets which are packed at weekends and busy but less crowded in the week. Bilbao has other attractions to research too. S Sebastian is more of a holiday resort with a lovely wide bay and beach with a smaller old town to the east. It doesn't have the same transport links. So on balance I would choose Bilbao. Alternatively if you have time why not do both as they are only an hour or so away from each other.

Hello,

I can thouroughly recommend the Hostal Itereannia which is on Calle Santa Maria in the Casco Viajo. It is really charming and comfortable family run hotel with about 10 rooms. It is slap bang in the old town which is where all the tapas bars are and is 5 minutes from the river and market.

It's around 60 Euros a night for a double room with bathroom, some have balconies overlooking the street. Tel 944 1615 00.

Have fun in a fantastic city.

Best wishes
