Bus Transport in Kyoto
Posted: Mon June 16, 2003 04:32 PM UTC
Hi, will be visiting Kyoto soon, and I have a question about using the bus as a means of transport. There are a variety of bus-passes available for tourists, and was wondering if anyone who had been to Kyoto would know which will be the most convenient or worthwhile one to get?

Also, I understand that the way it works in Kyoto is that you get a ticket from the rear of the buses and pay at the front. How does that work for someone who uses a pass?

Thanks, and sorry if my question seem a little dumb :P

We only used the day pass of 500 Yen. (Be sure you travel several times a day, to make it wothwhile.)
The first time you enter the bus that day you stamp your pass. The other times just show it to the driver on your way out.

Hi,welcome to Kyoto!

I find a website of Kyoto city transport agency. They explain how to use bus tickets briefly here.

By the way, do you live in Japan?

Have a good time in Kyoto!

bus pass

i have used the 500 yen bus pass as well. good for 1 day. it`s an excellent value if you are going to hop on & off buses to go sightseeing. if you are going to visit temples & gardens & castles, they are scattered all in different parts of central kyoto, so a bus pass is the way to go.
you have to buy at the bus station right outside JR kyoto station. they do have ppl who speak english there who can help you. and they have a VERY VERY excellent bus map to get you from main tourist attractions to the next (they have 2 maps, one in english, one in japanese. they have different information on the 2 versions though! the english one is better!!!).
be careful which bus you get on when you are outside of the station area. there are city buses & private buses. make sure you are using the one for the bus pass you got.
at the rear of the bus when you enter, you have to put your card through. but yes, not always. if you can`t, just show it to the bus driver on your way out.
hope this helps!
enjoy kyoto!!

There are also JR buses - if you have a JR Rail Pass, you can also use this pass on JR buses.
