Estado de Nuevo León Crossing through Nuevo Laredo
Posted: Mon May 29, 2006 05:31 PM UTC
Hello,
Can anyone give me an honest perspective on the danger level in Nuevo Laredo for people who are just crossing through and don't stop? We are moving to Monterrey this summer and the easiest and most direct route would be through Nuevo Laredo but it gets such terrible news coverage here in the states. Once in Monterrey, we would like to make an occasional trip back to the U.S. and Nuevo Laredo is obviously the shortest route. We have a friend who lives in Monterrey who was robbed at gunpoint last year while sitting in her car waiting to cross to the U.S. I wonder if this is a common occurrence.
Thanks so much

It has been several years since I drove through Nuevo Laredo
but if you stay on the main road during the day, the danger should
be minimal. At the NL crossing, the border processing is primarily
for those that are staying within the 20 km limit of the border.
If you are going further into the interior (which you would be
doing) the aduana (customs) office was about a mile or two away, and
not on the 'main drag' towards Monterrey. The toll road from
NL to Monterrey is expensive by US standards, but the free road is
full of NAFTA and in-country trucks and was replete with potholes,
so you will save time and hair by using the autopista.

It is as safe as any other motorway in the US, just don't stop on places without movement. I've done it several times.
